On February 26, 1955, she married the love of her life, Carl D. Ray, Jr. who predeceased her on March 31, When planting, the commission always matches a tree species with the appropriately sized tree lawn. In the case of electric lines, to avoid the harsh pruning inflicted upon trees growing in the overhead wires, smaller trees are planted. Older, power company-topped trees are being slowly removed, and whenever replanted, the new trees will be size-appropriate for that specific site.

Hopefully, this clears up the most general function of the commission. It also has several other, more specific projects it donates its time and resources to, and those projects can be some topics for a different column. The commission meets at 5 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. People with questions, comments or concerns are encouraged to attend.

Jim Slyh is the chairman of the Chillicothe Tree Commission. were inexpensive (or free if a seedling was collected from the wild), they grew very rapidly and provided quick shade. Unfortunately, the size of the tree lawn was not usually considered, and the trees grew out of their allotted site fairly quickly. The roots on silver maples are gross feeders (they require a lot of water and nutrients), and they will search out any cool, moist, fertile places in which to grow. Downspouts and drains serve that purpose all too well, as many people know.

Complicating matters is that the city has many old clay-tile drains that already are cracked or loose, and so are easily invaded by the roots. Sidewalks, and especially poorly constructed ones laid directly on the ground with no compacted layer, also fall victim to the aggressive roots. When you add to that to a small tree lawn, it is no wonder problems arise. Trees Continued from Page 1B Knowing what species we have will allow members to avoid overplant-ing any one family of trees and diversify future street and park plantings. Diversity of trees will allow the city to avoid the prohibitive costs of removing trees because of an outbreak of a species-dependent insect or disease, such as emerald ash borer, Dutch elm disease, or chestnut blight.

This column would not be complete without addressing the sidewalk tree root conflict and the treeelectric wire issues. When the commission was established, it inherited many problem trees on the right of way, such as silver maples. Silver maples have a superficial and aggressive root system. Many were planted in tree lawns because they Obituaries and photographs submitted to the Chillicothe Gazette may be published, distributed, repurposed and otherwise used in print, electronic and other media platforms.
