I WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1944 CHILLICOTHE GAZETTE AND CHILLICOTHE NEWS-ADVERTISER PAGE SEVEN TURKEY DINNER ENJOYED BY SALEM MATES Strings of colored lights outlined the tables arranged in the form of a Christmas tree at the turkey dinner enjoyed by Salem Mates of Salem Evangelical and Reformed church, Monday night at the church. A decorated Christmas tree was in the center of the triangle by the hollow, and all appointments carried out the Christmas theme Christmas cards, which marked places for 60 guests, were inscribed with the program and menu. Dinner was served by the Misses Maxine Snyder, Martha Ralston, Ruth Feldmaier, Dorothy Miller and Kathryn Nolze wearing black frocks and frilly white aprons. The invocation was giver in unison and the program after dinner included showing of a motion picture, "Child of "The Story of Our Christmas Plants and Flowers," by the Rev. R.

E. Schluer; and a Christmas recitation by each member. Mrs. Albert Kern received a prize for the best recitation and the second prize was awarded Mr. and Mrs.

Harvey Caldwell, who tied. Committee for the affair was composed of Mr. and Mrs Earl Rumbaugh, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Phillips, the Rev.

Mr. and Mrs. Schluer, Mr. and Mrs. Don Ortman and Mr.

(Buzz) Krider, brings the news to East Second street, that he is hospital in Italy.

Navigator on a Liberator with the 15th Air Force in Italy, Lt. Krider writes: "I am back in the hospital for the second time after being discharged on Oct. 12, after flying about 10 To make a long story short, we were on a flight on Nov. 7, in Northern Italy, when I got hit by a piece of flak. A big piere went in my right side, hit about everything on the way and finally stopped in my middle somewhere.

It was quite an experience, one which I don't care to indulge in again. Anyhow, I seem to have weathered it pretty good. In fact, never lost consciousness until I got on the 'operating table six hours later. It took us three hours to fly back from the target. Please don't worry as I am able to walk and that is something." In his letter, Lt.

Krider, who was awarded the Air Medal last September, for "meritorious achievement in aerial flight against German installations in Vienna, Munich and the Ploesti oil fields in Romania," does not explain why he was in the hospital the first time. He does verify the fact that he was promoted to first lieutenant on Sept. 29. Prior to being wounded, he says he met James Beyerly whose parents, Mr. and Mrs.

Lou Beyerly, live next door to the Gazette, and also noted that Lt. Allen Mettler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Mettler, Chestnut street, registered on the visitors' book at the Red Cross Officers' club. "Buzz" as he is familiarly known, for active duty in January, after enlisting reported, in September, 1942.

He received his navigator wings and commission at San Marcos, last April, and was shipped overseas early last June. He would like to hear from his classmates at CHS, his wife, Mrs. Betty Miller, 361 East Second street, a and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Miller, North Brownell street.

Recently graduated from Sioux Falls Radio Technical school, Sioux Falls, S. Pvt. Harold E. Vollmer, is spending a short furlough with his wife, Mrs. Ann Vollmer, 194 Allen avenue, en route to Bergstrom field, Austin, where he has been assigned as radio operator-navigator to the AAF Troop Carrier Command.

-0 HEARS FROM SON The anxiety of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Oak street, was greatly relieved this week when they received two letters from their son, Fireman Bernard Wolf, 18 who has seen a great deal of action in the Pacific during the past -everal months. Bernard wrote that his ship was hit and he lost everything he had in cluding his buddy best buddy a fellow could ever expect to have." He adds: "I hope to get home as soon as we get back to the States and tell everyone hello." With the exception of a brief note received on Nov. 3, saying he was safe, the letters his parents received this week were the first to arrive from him since last August.

-0- RECEIVES PURPLE HEART department notifiche, Mrs. Sam Easter, Route 6, that her husband, a private in the army, was making normal improvement on Nov. 24 from slight wounds he received in action on Nov. 5 in France. Mrs.

Easter and her sons, Larry and Johnny, have also received the Purple Heart Medal awarded Pvt. Easter. -0 ENTERS ACTIVE DUTY Apprentice Seaman Lloyd D. Trego 17, former Chillicothe Lumber Co. employe, who reported for active duty on Dec.

5, is now undergoing his boot training at great Lakes, where his address is Co. 2222, U. S. N. T.

S. Lloyd is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Smith Trego, 265 South Mulberry street. He enlisted in the navy on Nov.
