Saturday, August 1 5, 1 992 Chillicothe Gazette TV TIMES 1 7 Don Bluth's 'Rock-A-Doodle' swings into video stores On home video superstardom. "I knew that the children 4 to 9 wouldn't (connect with) that," Bluth says. "That (the Elvis element) is for their parents. So many adults watch these films with their children that you always need a little something special for them. So, we gave them some nostalgia." "Rock-A-Doodle" is, nonetheless, kid's stuff: the narrative is simple, and the theme, though universal, speaks loudest to young children.

The film follows real-life boy, Edmond, who is forced to sit in his room and do nothing while his parents and older brothers struggle to save their farm from the effects of heavy rain. While reading the story of Chanticleer, he's whisked into the rooster's all-animated world, and with a gaggle of new 'toon pals sets out to stop the rain. Fresh out of high school, the now-nftyish Bluth began working as an animator, on Walt Disney's 1959 classic "Sleeping Beauty." He left the studio after 18 months to attend Brigham Young University. By 1968, he'd landed a gig as a layout artist at the Filmation studios, and then returned to Disney for most of the 70s. There, he worked on six features, including "Robin Hood," "The Fox and the Hound," as well as the original "The Rescuers," which is due on video all-animated "Thumbelina," featuring the voice of Disney's Little Mermaid, Jodi Benson.

(D) "Ready to Ride" (Penthouse) By MIKE CIDONI Gannett News Service Don Bluth's animated musical "Rock-A-Doodle" is slated to hit video stores Aug. 19 ($24.98, HBO tapes). "I've always loved the story of Chanticleer," the director explains, by phone from his studio in Ireland. In 1910, "Cyrano" playwright Edmond Rostand wrote a barnyard fable called "Chantecler." Performed just once, according to Bluth, the play portrays a rooster who believes his crowing makes the sun rise each day. But then he loses his self-confidence.

"I got a hold of it a few years ago and wondered 'How in the world will I ever translate this to a children's Bluth, whose credits include "An American Tail" and "The Land Before Time," took the story's basics and let his staff go wild. don't we make it a they said," Bluth recalls. "Then it was 'Why not rock Then 'Why not early rock, like Elvis When all was said and done, "Rock-A-Doodle" became almost as inspired by Elvis as Edmond. Presley buffs will marvel at Glen Campbell's perfect take on the warm baritone of The King's early records; at the script's sly potshot at Presley's protective manager, Col. Tom Parker; at the fans, the mayhem, and at the country boy lost in the shuffle of next month.

Impressive as those were, it was not at Disney, but at Bluth's house, where the real passion project was being produced. On their off hours, Bluth, and fellow Disney animators Gary Goldman and John Pomeroy, worked on the animated featurette "Banjo, The Woodpile Cat." The 1979 release is available on tapes from Children's Video Library, and is one Bluth suggests animation buffs seek. "My favorite, of course, is 'An American Tail' (1986, MCA-Universal) I love that picture. And, my second would probably be 'All Dogs Go to Heaven' (1989, MGM-UA). That takes me back to my childhood, and all my dogs that I owned.

Attracted by lower labor costs, the El Paso, Texas-born Bluth moved his operation from Hollywood to Dublin in the mid-'80s, during the making of "Land Before Time." His Don Bluth Entertainment employs more than 300 people there, and has a U.S. division employing another The company, in association with MGM, will release three features next year, including the Tuesday overnight (S3 it) G3 2s: PAID PROGRAM 133 33 SPORTS LATENIGHT it LETS LEARN JAPANESE 9X33 23: MISTER ED 81H1 34 MY SISTER SAM 5:05 NBC NEWS NIGHTSIDE C3 3 GOMER PYLE, USMC 5:30 8 THIS MORNING'S BUSINESS .10 CBS MORNING NEWS ii NBC NEWS AT SUNRISE CO 26: SALUTE TO THE STATES: OHIO GO 83S3 if: iJV.t if': CJ3 2s: nn 34 PAID PROGRAM tT? 39.
