Associates 010 01 2 2 6 SportsPlus 233 1312 10 3 Turn back the clocks to settle this game WORCESTER, Mass. Two games and the bare-handed series between Troy and Worcester is still tied. Maybe they should play one more time to settle things. "If the fans want it, we'll do it," said Richard Phelps, manager of the Brown Stockings, who defeated the Haymakers from Troy, N.Y., on June 20, 3-1, leaving a series dating back to 1882 tied at 19-19. Actually, Phelps prefers a tournament that would include Troy, Worcester and two other cities that hosted old teams.

Perhaps hold the championship game at Cooperstown. All they need to do is reserve the time at Abner Doubleday Field. Tom Blair, the director of the Office for Special Events in Troy, said he's already received interest from Syracuse about some games next year. "The purpose was basically to say to everybody that we are still honorary members of the National League. Troy just wanted to celebrate its heritage and I feel we got out point across," Blair said.

The Haymakers and Brown Stockings, from about 50 miles west of Fenway Park, were two of the original members of the National League. But they were kicked out in 1882 for, among other things, a lack of attendance, but granted lifetime honorary membership status as a consolation. Worcester's spot was filled by the Philadelphia Phillies, Troy's by the New York Giants. The two old teams renewed their battles in June, playing under the same rules used in the 1880s, dressed in old-style wool uniforms and playing without gloves. On June 6, Troy won on their home field 2-0.

Worcester gained a measure of revenge two weeks later at Fitton Field on the campus of Holy Cross with 3-1 victory. The game drew about 2,000 fans on a muggy, overcast day, some in fashions from the 1880s. Adults paid 50 cents admission, kids under 8 got in free. Except for the electronic scoreboard and public address system, and the cars whizzing by on the elevated highway in the background, the fans were treated to what it was like at an old-time baseball game. The Al Youngman Band sat in the bleachers, entertaining between innings with songs of the period, from "Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-Dee-Ay" and "And The Band Played On." Joe Gleason, the lone umpire working the game, either stood behind the pitcher or off to the side of home plate, depending whether there was a man on base.

The pitchers were required to throw the ball submarine-style, never throwing above their waist, causing great pain. CHARLIE SAYS: ran the kraftmaid HICMDRY I GUARANTEE YOU WONT BEAT OUR PRICES!
